How to Stay Motivated When It Feels Like You Can’t

We have all been there. It could be day three, week four, month five, or even year six, but we all lose motivation every once in a while. It happens to every single one of us. It’s that inner quitter in us that wants the easy way out. That sneaky son of a gun wants to push aside all of your best intentions for a big dose of your old unhealthy habits.

So, how do you stay motivated in the face of this inner evil? Here are some of our best tips for getting back on track and crossing the finish line.

Give Yourself a Break

While stress can motivate some, the chances are that if you stress too much, your body will start shutting down. Studies show that stress actually leads to increased inflammation in the body which affects your immune system and can even cause chronic illness.

So, stop stressing over losing motivation. Instead, tell yourself that it is reasonable to feel this way, do your best to stick to the goals, and keep going.

Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints and 2010 Super Bowl MVP said, “You have to push past your perceived limits, push past that point you thought was as far as you can go.”

Find a Buddy

An essential part of goal setting and staying motivated is accountability. Have a support system in place throughout your journey. Make sure that they uplift and push you towards your goals, but also make it a point to find friends that you trust.

Research shows that 70% of people who set a weekly update to a friend were successful in meeting their goals. Plus, having a buddy that is on the same track as you automatically gives you someone to pair up with at the gym or talk with about how you are doing. Chances are they will understand what you are going through because they have been there with you from the beginning.

Follow Inspirational Accounts

Instagram is a total jackpot for fitness advice, healthy recipes, free workout guides. All in all, it is a great place to go when your motivational tank is on ‘empty.’ Take some time to scour Instagram looking for health-focused accounts that speak to you. Whether it’s bodybuilders, plant-based trainers, or even inspirational quote accounts, there are thousands of accounts waiting for you to hit ‘follow.’

Visualization is Key

Visualizing your goals is a proven method for helping you achieve them. Now, we aren’t necessarily talking about hanging a photo of a celebrity’s body (but if that rocks your boat then definitely go for it). But it is proven that visualizing a goal or mantra will help you stay motivated throughout the day. Do this by writing down your goal and a quote that enables you to stay on track. Hang this up on a bathroom mirror, or somewhere you will see it every day.

Don’t Give Up

The most important thing you can do when you lose motivation is not giving up. Even if you can’t put in as much effort as you were before, keep pushing. Instead of excusing yourself and sitting the entire week out, try rewarding yourself for the progress you made. Then, get right back into it.
